Brazil - Sworn translations

Translations into Portuguese

Foreign documents required for submission to authorities in Brazil should be translated into Portuguese in Brazil. Translations should be done after all certifications (e.g. Apostilles) have been applied to the original documents. Translations required for submission to Brazilian authorities must be certified by a sworn public translator (tradutor público juramentado) from the register of public translators (Cadastro Nacional de Tradutores Públicos).

Translations from Portuguese

Certified translations of documents in Portuguese that are needed for use abroad must be certified in Brazil by a sworn public translator, then legalized with an Apostille Stamp issued by Brazil's National Justice Council (Conselho Nacional de Justiça). Sworn translations of Brazilian documents required for submission to foreign embassies and consulates in Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, are legalized by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Translations into Portuguese

Foreign documents required for submission to authorities in Portugal can be translated in Portugal. Translations should be done after all certifications (e.g. Apostilles) have been applied to the original documents. Certified translations of documents in Portuguese that are needed for use abroad must be legalized with an Apostille Stamp by the Office of the Attorney General (Secretária-Geral da Procuradoria-Geral da República), or by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the embassy of the destination country in Lisbon.

A certified Portuguese translation only provides legal assurance that the translation is true and accurate; it does not confirm the authenticity of the original document.

When submitting foreign documents for legal purposes, e.g. immigration procedures, court cases or visa applications, it is generally necessary to first legalize the original document.
