Certified translations in Australia

Translations from English

Translations of Australian documents can be authenticated for use abroad by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) with an Apostille Stamp or Authentication certificate. DFAT will only accept translations completed by a National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters NAATIExternal link (opens in new tab) certified or recognised translator. The translation must include the translator's name and signature, the official National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) seal (stamp), including the translator's practitioner ID and the date of translation.

Translations into English

When submitting non-English documents in Australia, check with the authority you are submitting to whether they have specific requirements for the certification of the English translation. For example, the Australian Department of Home Affairs requires translations performed in Australia to be certified by a translator who is accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

Translations done outside Australia should be certified by a professional translator registered with an official organisation. The translation should be endorsed by the translator with their full name, address, telephone number, and details of their qualifications and experience in the language being translated. For additional assurance, translations done abroad could be certified by the translator before a notary and authenticated with an Apostille Stamp.

If a translation is being submitted to an Australian High Commission or EmbassyExternal link (opens in new tab) check with the embassy for any specific requirements.

Translations into English

When submitting non-English documents in the UK, check with the authority you are submitting to whether they have specific requirements for the certification of the English translation. For example, the Home Office requires that each translation is provided with a certificate of accuracy in which the translator confirms that it is an accurate translation of the original document, with the date of translation, the translator’s full name and signature and the translator’s contact details.

It is recommended that translations are undertaken and certified by an accredited UK translation agency or translator, for example a translator belong to a recognized professional body such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), or the Association of Translation Companies (ATC). For additional assurance, translations can be certified by the translator before a UK notary.

Translations done abroad should also be accepted by most UK authorities, provided that they are certified by a professional translator or translation agency. For additional assurance, translations done abroad could be certified by the translator before a notary and authenticated with an Apostille Stamp.

Certified translations in the United States

Translations from English

US documents required for submission to countries which do not have English as an official language can be translated in the United States or, in most cases, in the country of destination.

Translations performed in the United States required for submission to member countries of the Apostille Convention should be certified by the translator before a notary and then authenticated in the State where the notary is commissioned by the Secretary of State with an Apostille Stamp

Translations required for submission to non-Apostille countries will require an authentication certificate from the Secretary of State and the Department of State, then attestation by the embassy of the recipient country.

Authenticating US documents in foreign languages

If a document written in a foreign language needs to be authenticated in the United States for use abroad with an Apostille Stamp or Authentication Certificate (for example a power of attorney signed in the USA), it may still be necessary to provide the Secretary of State issuing the Apostille or Authentication with a notarized translation into English - rules vary depending on the state.

Translations into English

Translations of overseas documents for submission to US authorities and courts can be certified in the United States or country of origin. Check with the recipient authority for any specific requirements. Translations certified abroad can be authenticated with an Apostille Stamp in the country of origin. Translations into English performed in the USA can be certified by a US notary public.

Apostille and Legalization Services

A certified English translation only provides legal assurance that the translation is true and accurate; it does not confirm the authenticity of the original document.

When submitting foreign documents for legal purposes, e.g. immigration procedures, court cases or visa applications, it is generally necessary to first legalize the original document. Depending on the country of issue, this can be done with an Apostille Stamp or at the embassy of the recipient country.
