Submission within the European Union
Certain Hungarian documents do not require Apostilles when they are presented to authorities of other European Union countries (the receiving authority should accept the original or a certified copy).

When applying for certain public documents, a multilingual standard form may be requested to accompany the original. A multilingual standard form must always be issued and signed by a Hungarian authority, providing a translation aid designed to help the receiving authority to understand a public document which is in a language not accepted by the receiving EU country.

What types of documents can be legalized in Hungary for use abroad?

Apostille stamps can be obtained for documents issued in Hungary when signed by a public official, including birth, death and marriage certificates, Criminal Record Certificates, certified copies of court documents, university diplomas and transcripts, and school certificates. Other documents, such as powers of attorney, can be authenticated with an Apostille when certified by a Hungarian civil law notary and legalized by the Hungarian Chamber of Civil Law Notaries.

How can I obtain an apostille for a Hungarian birth, death or marriage certificate?

Apostilles for Hungarian birth, death and marriage certificates are obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The original certificate is required. Birth certificates issued before 01 March 2006 are not eligible for an Apostille stamp - a new certificate must be obtained from the Civil Registry Office or embassy.

Submission within the European Union

How can I obtain an apostille for my Hungarian University Degree and Transcripts?

To obtain an apostille stamp on a Hungarian university diploma, a notarized true copy can be made (this can normally be done from a good quality scan). The true copy is certified by the Hungarian Chamber of Civil Law Notaries and then with an Apostille stamp from the Ministry of Justice.

If the Apostille is required on the original diploma, it will need to be legalized by the Office of Education before it can be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Primary and secondary school certificates require prior legalization by the Ministry of Human Capacities.
